Lyon slip to rare defeat

Mickael Pagis helped himself to a hat-trick as inspired Rennes dished out a 3-0 drubbing to Ligue 1 champions Lyon.

The veteran striker was in irresistible form to hand Lyon a first defeat of the season and lift the hosts up to seventh.

Lyon looked desperately off the pace after their Champions League exertions in midweek and Rennes could have been even more convincing winners.

The visitors still lead the table despite the defeat, but are only two points clear of second-placed Toulouse.

Hugo Lloris' goal was under pressure early on as Jimmy Briand shot just wide after being released by Olivier Thomert.

The same pair combined to good effect again barely a minute later, Briand's attempted lob beating the Lyon stopper but just clearing the crossbar.

Rennes took a deserved lead in the 16th minute when Pagis side-footed home from close range after being set up by Moussa Sow.

At the other end Nicolas Douchez got down well to save Frederic Piquionne's volley from Kader Keita's cross, but in truth Lyon were never at the races.

And Pagis sent them packing with two goals in the opening 21 minutes of the second half.

The 35-year-old slotted the second into an empty net in the 56th minute after Thomert had taken Lloris out of the equation with a ball across the area and sealed his hat-trick 10 minutes later after punishing a mistake by Kim Kallstrom.

Rennes continued to look dangerous and Lloris had to be alert to keep out a header from Abdou Kader Mangane.

Juninho might have snatched a consolation for Lyon late on when his long-range effort just cleared the top corner, but that would have been scarcely deserved.
