Lyon fall for Caen trick

In-form Caen gained their biggest scalp yet when they downed leaders and French champions Lyon 1-0 on Saturday.

Yoann Gouffran's 18th-minute goal was enough for the hosts to maintain their excellent recent form, which has included a 5-0 spanking of Bordeaux and a victory over Paris St Germain.

It lifted Franck Dumas' side up to seventh in Ligue 1 but it could have been worse for Lyon, who play a vital Champions League game against Rangers in the week to come.

Second-placed Nancy could only draw 0-0 with Valenciennes, who kept their fourth clean sheet in a row, meaning that Lyon's lead now stands at four points.

Le Mans moved up to third with an impressive 3-1 win at Lens.

Aruna Dindane equalised for the hosts after Tullio De Melo had put Le Mans in front, but goals from Gervinho and Anthony Le Tallec sealed the win for Les Manceaux.

Sochaux's miserable run continued with a 2-1 defeat at Lorient, who took the lead in the first minute through Marama Vahiru.

Ulrich Le Pen made it 2-0 before Mevlut Erding reduced arrears, but there was no equaliser for Sochaux whose coach Frederic Hantz has been told his position will be reviewed over Christmas.

Marseille approached their crucial Champions League game against Liverpool with a fine 2-0 Mediterranean derby win over Monaco, the goals coming from Julien Rodriguez and Lorik Cana.

Johan Elmander earned Toulouse a 1-0 win over Lille while Alvaro Santos scored twice and Wason Renteria once in Strasbourg's 3-0 win over Rennes, who have now lost five Ligue 1 matches on the trot.

Bottom club Metz are well adrift at the bottom of the division after a 2-0 reverse at the hands of St Etienne, for whom Pascal Feindouno sealed the win after a Sebastien Bassong own goal.
