Auxerre hold Lyon

Lyon's Ligue 1 malaise continued on Saturday as they were held to a goalless draw at Auxerre.

Both sides struck the woodwork - Lyon winger Kader Keita in the first half and Ireneusz Jelen for the hosts in the second - but Auxerre will come away thinking they should have taken all three points at the Stade l'Abbe-Deschamps.

Les Gones, who have claimed just two points from their last three league games, remain top but they can be leapfrogged by Marseille if the Mediterranean side beat Paris St Germain on Sunday.

The champions' suspect defence has been under scrutiny this season and it looked particularly shaky in a first half Auxerre shaded.

The closest either team came to breaking the deadlock before the break was in the eighth minute when Keita's chip from 30 yards clipped the bar before going over.

But the majority of the chances came at the other end, Jean-Pascal Mignot heading over and Jelen seeing his scuffed shot turned aside by Remy Vercoutre in the 11th minute.

In the final 15 minutes of the half, Kevin Lejeune headed into the side-netting, Daniel Niculae fluffed a great opportunity with the goal at his mercy and Moussa Narry nodded wide when free 10 yards out as Auxerre piled on the pressure.

The interval could not come quickly enough for Lyon, who were more compact in the second half although they almost conceded in the 64th minute.

Niculae set Jelen free down the right and the Pole cut in before crashing a shot against the near post from 12 yards.

The visitors hardly threatened in the final half-hour, apart from when Karim Benzema shot wide from the angle after exchanging passes with Keita.
